New Comics up

I'd like to take a break from my finals to talk to you about Tokyopop's new Manga Pilot contract. Well, really I'm just going to link the author of Scott Pilgram because he basically said everything I would say. SCAD invites editors from several comic companies to the school once a year. This year they didn't invite Tokyopop because as one of my professors said "we want students to get jobs, not get raped" and that is basically the jist of what O'Malley has to say.

Holy mother of God, that's terrible. Thanks for the link, even if the chance of it ever applying to me is less than 10%, due to lack of artistic and writing skills.

...Your moral rights? What the hell? That's just sickening, really.

And now I'm curious as to what M. Alice LeGrow signed. I LOVE Bizenghast, and I liked her fanfiction before Biz was even published. It saddens me to think that she may have been taken advantage of.

(What is SCAD? I've seen you mention it, but I don't recall ever reading about what it was.)

And yay, Danny got a spell right! *waits for him to screw it up on the next page*

Scad starts for Savannah College of Art and Design, it's the college I attend. And I have heard nothing good about Tokyopop so M. Alice LeGrow probably doesn't own the right to Bizenghast.

Wow, SCAD actually didn't invite them this year?
I taught at SCAD for a weekend as a visiting artist. I loved the school. When I heard, some time back, they'd invited TP out, I wanted to cry.

I talked about the contract here:

Hope linked to it, then Bryan, he done killed it ded.

Oh, I read that when I was going through the comments there. Thanks for explaining what, precisely, moral rights were. The bit in their contract just looked stupid before I knew exactly what it was. After I read your post, I decided it was more along the lines of "disgusting." *shakes head*

That's right. They are still trying to find a good Manga publisher to replace them. This year they asked Delray/Random House, but most people weren't happy with that editor so they are still looking.

Delray is pretty cool, though I don't really see what they have to do with Art and Design...

Good for SCAD!
And oh, man, I want to kick Tokyopop in its metaphorical crotch for this. What a condescending piece of junk.

Thanks for putting this out there. My brother wants to start a comic and I'd hate for him to fall into a trap where his moral rights over his creation is taken away.
Thanks to everyone who is looking out for all us aspiring comic artists.

Wow. That's... wow. There are so many young people who are going to be dragged into this because they don't know any better. They just see it as a way to get famous, which probably isn't going to be the case from the looks of things. While I am not fond of this generation, they don't deserve to be screwed like this by a huge corporation.

As for the comic today, I love the look of total surprise on Danny's face. I'm assuming it's going to blow up, though, because he's no longer concentrating. *heh*

I didn't realize that someone could actually get people to sign such arrogant bullshit. At that point you might as well sell yourself as a slave and be done with it.

Heh, I would very much like to tie this contract to a loaded septic tank and blow it up inside their coporate HQ so they can have a visual aid of the load of shit this contract really is.

Were the editors invited during the same weekend that alums from the industry came to Norris to hold seminars?

There is Comic Art Forum in the Fall where industry guests come and do workshops, and then there is Editors' Day in the spring where grads, seniors, and juniors have their portfolios looked at by editors.

Ah, okay. I went to the Comic Art Forum (being a sophomore). I just wasn't sure if it was at that same event that editors were present elsewhere as opposed to a different event. Thanks for clearing that up. =)

I was at my local comic shop and on a whim picked up a couple of his books after reading one at my schools library, and the store owner then informed me that O'Malley had just moved to our town. I suppose that is nothing related but i just thought it was neat to see him mentioned.

[As regards the comic on May 30th] You got the Latin right! You got it right! I am flabbergasted, stunned, amazed! It's a web comic first! Latin revives!
...
And I like the comic too. ;)
